Scout Unit 1

Project Recap

A science-fiction inspired bio-tech scouting unit.

This was my first sci-fi hard surface project. I had great fun in designing it, adding sci-fi components like infrared lighting system, augmented-reality system on contact lens, electrostatic cleaning eyebrows...

The eye geometry is modeled to mimic the proper parts of the human eye (cornea, pupil, sclera, iris) and some diseases correlated to the bionic nature of this unit (particles suspended in the aqueous humour, weird iris coloration).
The contact lens features an array of RGB micro-projectors on the border, placed to draw and additional augmented-reality layer on the thin silicone.
All these parts have accurate materials to simulate the real-life lighting as much as I could:
proper index of refractions, sub-surface scattering, etc. In fact some wild caustics arose in the final rendering :)
  • Type: personal project

  • Modelling: Maya
  • Texturing: MARI
  • Rendering: Octane Standalone
  • Post-production: Photoshop, Looks, After Effects

  • Featured in 3D Artist magazine, issue 73 (October 2014) as Image of the Month
